South Australian State of Origin Team Round 1 2015

Here is the rolling South Australian SOO team after Round 1 in the AFL.

Every week during the duration of the AFL season this article will provide the best 22 players in each position for the Croweaters during the week. Another three, on top of the 22, will be picked as reserves.

The following rules apply for every week of selection.

1. They must play in the AFL round and not be injured.

2. They must come from South Australia, represent the state in previous lower level competitions, and play in the AFL. (This rules out Taylor Walker – who played for NSW in the Under 18’s)

At the middle of the season, and at the end of the season, I will provide a team of the year update as to those who would play for SA if State of Origin existed.

There will be plenty of arguments about the team from week to week so let the games begin.

At the bottom of the article is all the stats involving each South Australian in the AFL for the round in question.

Here is the team for Round 1:

ROUND 1

Round 1 SOO

EXPLANATION OF THE SQUAD –

DEFENDERS –

*Rory Laird and Brodie Smith were automatically picked after dominating the Kangaroos over the weekend.

*Heath Grundy and Joel Patfull held Joe Daniher and Nick Riewoldt to just one goal each over the weekend. They also found plenty of the ball for a tall defender.

*Shaun Burgoyne was one of the key players for the Hawks as they started their premiership defence in style against the Cats.

*Sam Fisher was in the top 5 in disposals for the Saints. One of his best games for the club for a while.

MIDFIELD –

*After the ferocious game between Fremantle and Port, it is no surprise the centre of the midfield is dominated by players from both clubs.

*Jared Polec was great on the wing for the Power and Brad Ebert was the best South Australian player in Round 1.

*Danyle Pearce was influential in keeping the Dockers in the contest in the 2nd and 3rd quarters.

*Brodie Grundy was the leading hit-out getter amongst the SA ruckman and defeated his opponent over the night.

*Lachie Neale was solid in the midfield for Fremantle.

*Bryce Gibbs was Carlton’s best player in their loss to Richmond.

ATTACK –

*Troy Menzel was Carlton’s leading forward against Richmond.

*Matt Pavlich was outstanding for Fremantle and was their 2nd best player in the match. How does a 33 year old move and contest like that?

*Lindsay Thomas was one of North’s best and led the charge when they came back in the 3rd quarter against the Crows.

*Paul Puopolo & Chad Wingard both kicked vital goals in their sides win.

*When Taylor Walker wasn’t kicking goals, Eddie Betts was. He was – to use a V8 Supercar term – mega for the Crows.

The other 7 players – 4 interchange and 3 emergencies – were the best of the rest for SA. The interchange is comprised of a ruckman, a defender, a forward, and a backman.

Adam Cooney was very unlucky not to be in the 18.

Here is a list of all the players eligible for SA. 56/110 played over the weekend. 2 were subs for their teams.
